Halloween a day celebrated around the world when people dress up in costumes, collect candy from neighbors and have parties, but do you ever take time to think about the origins of Halloween? Most people don’t think twice about participating in it saying “It’s all in fun” or “It’s not evil to me”, but is this so called hallow evening really so innocent? Are there ties to paganism and Satanism? Shall we as Christians celebrate Halloween or should we have an alternative name for it like Harvest Festival? Before we get into those questions let’s take a closer look at the history of this night and how it all started.
Samhain or Halloween as it is called today was celebrated on Oct 31 to Nov 2nd and started out as 1 of 4 major holy days to the Celtic Druids referred to as fire festivals by them. To the Celts fire was a symbol of divinity, holiness, truth, and beauty. To the Druids these events signified the beginning of the cold and dark half of the year. Their belief was on this night the veil between the living and the dead was dropped and dead souls were wondering the earth creating havoc and causing mischief. To appease them the Celts dressed up like the dead souls so they wouldn’t cause them harm. Large bonfires were made and animals and crops were also thrown into the bonfire as sacrifices. Communing with the dead and divination or fortune telling was also a common practice during this time.
Later on Catholicism came in and changed the name of this pagan three day holiday to Halloween or All-Hallows eve, All-Saints day and All-Souls day. As Catholicism did with many other pagan traditions like Valentine’s Day from Lupercalia, Easter from Eostre, and Christmas from Yule they kept the symbols and pagan elements, and the purpose of this festival remained the same too, but just repackaged with so-called Roman catholic elements and names.
So we see from the history alone this isn’t some innocent celebration involving children getting candy. “Oh but that was so long ago, we don’t celebrate it like how they did” you might say. Let me read to you a quote by Anton LaVey (A Satanist) from his book “The Satanic Bible” “After one’s own birthday, the two major satanic holidays are Walpurgisnacht(Walpurgis Night) and Halloween (or All Hallows’ Eve).” In case that didn’t sink in, Satanism conceders this one of their top holidays do you still want to be part of it?
3 john 1:11 says “Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God“.
2 Corinthians 6:14 “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?”
Halloween is filled with darkness from symbols of death, ghosts, devils and witches. We should not want to have anything to do with this. God wants us to be separate.
2 Corinthians 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
The Lord has warned us not to play around with these ocultic ways.
Deuteronomy 18:9-14
9 When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.
10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.
11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.
13 Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.
14 For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.
Now should we have an alternative for this day like “Harvest Festivals”? Alternative, however, implies substitute. It assumes our children need something to take the place of Halloween, since they won’t be participating in the secular and pagan celebrations. It suggests our children are missing out on something, which they are not. Rather teach your children 1 John 2:15″ Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” Teach your children the truth about Halloween and its origins. You might think that you’re doing some good by having your own alternative party, but why do you need a substitute at all and especially on this specific night? By doing so you are still keeping this satanic tradition alive not transforming it.
1 Thessalonians 5:22 “Abstain from all appearance of evil.”
The world should see Christians as being completely against this satanic day. We should not celebrate this day and be against anything that resembles it. Changing the name of the day to ‘Harvest Festival’ doesn’t change what this day truly is and gives the wrong impression to others. Shall we try to Christianize other pagan days to fit in with the world? No. We should cast them away as it is written in Romans 13:12 “The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.”
Remember, we are in a war. Will you fight? Or shall we just make up alternatives to the worlds wickedness.
Ephesians 6:11-13
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Great article, I agree with you.. this was very well written, you hit all the truths. My husband and I got saved after we were married and had a baby. He was firm that we wouldn’t partake in Halloween, and for the first few years, I felt sorry for my kids-like they were missing something. I wanted to take them to all the “alternatives” at local churches but my husband felt strongly, as you stated in your article, that it’s just making a substitute for halloween. Now our kids are 8,6 and 3 and they have never dressed up for halloween (they have plenty of dress up clothes-we tell them they can dress up any day of the year) and once we explained to them the meaning of halloween and it’s origins they didn’t want anything to do with it. I think it’s hard when they hear kids at school (a Christian school) talk about what they’re going to be for halloween, or when well-meaning cashiers at stores ask what they’re going to be (my kids are also used to the “are you ready for santa?” question!) but overall they don’t seem to care. When they see the billboards with creepy pictures and commercials on tv for haunted houses and ghosts, etc, it’s easy for them to see the evil in it and that the Lord does not bring the spirit of fear. It’s amazing to see God’s goodness and light in little children who believe in Him and know His Word. I hope no one feels sorry for my kids not partaking in halloween–I feel sorry for kids who don’t know the truth. Thanks for your great articles!
Congratulations Lisa on this step and I am happy to read that you obeyed your husband and because of that, you get to see how well things work when you obey. This is done by faith and it applies to much more than just this decision.
Eventually, not too far from now, we shall all have to stand by faith in the word of the Lord when the beast and his mark are made manifest. The church will be here and will have to all make that decision in those days. Thankfully there are many wonderful promises that have been given to us (too many to list here) in the word of the Lord, the King James. We also have the blessed hope of Jesus’ return for his own. It won’t matter if we’re dead, because he is able to raise it up at the last day and will even if we’re dust and ashes and that’s the worst they can do to us!
But this is a good place to start standing against the world. It begins with baby steps. If you cannot even take this small stand, how will you stand when it comes to a choice of life and death? That’s the question we must figure out now before it’s too late.
Very good Lisa. I agree with everything you wrote.
Most people celebrate Halloween as they celebrate Christmas. With little thought to it’s origin. My family and I do “celebrate” Halloween, but only under the dressing up and getting candy. Of course, that is the 4yo and 2yo dressing up and getting candy. Under that description it’s probably better stated as celebrating “Trick-or-Treating”.
It’s still not ok to just do the “Trick-or-treating”. Where do you think “trick-or-treating” came from? Any observance of days such as these in any shape or form is forbidden by the Lord Jesus Christ. This day and any thing associated with it is pagan and satanic. “Dressing up” and “getting candy” still consists of you partaking in a pagan satanic high day. Remember the Lord said (Luke 11:23 He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.) The Lord does not seek someone who is ok with compromising, He seeks only those who will serve him in spirit and in truth (John 4:23-24). It would be profitable for you to go through the Observing days bible study that you can find on this web-site. I hope that this bible study will help you.
Dressing up as Denis the Menace and getting candy harms nothing.
People who put up a tree and hand out gifts aren’t celebrating Jesus’ birth either. On the same thought, people who fill a basket with candy on Easter aren’t celebrating the death/burial/resurrection.
There is no compromise in this issue. Commercialism took a hold of something and that’s simply what it is now. There are no ceremonies in our household worshiping Satan, etc…
I’m not looking to you for answers or a Bible study by the way. I do very well on my own.
Pro 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. (also see Prov 16:25). [Even though you think that you are not causing harm by doing such thing, you are confusing your children. We are told to be separate from the world and not to have anything to do with such heathen activities. Romans 12:2]
Mark 7:1-9 “For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men. . . . And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.”
[All these days are are just traditions that we have learned from childhood. But the Lord strictly forbids keeping the traditions of men. Matt 15, Mark 7, Col 2:8, 1st Peter 1:18]
Matthew 6:24 “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”
(James 1:8 “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”)
[So are you saying you can serve the Lord and “celebrate” or observe days as well?]
Leviticus 19:26 “Ye shall not eat any thing with the blood: neither shall ye use enchantment, nor observe times.”
Galatians 4:9-11 “Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.”
[Even if you are not doing a spiritual sacrifice to satan, you are still observing this unholy day. “Hallow” means Holy and there nothing holy about this day in a way.]
Pro 15:10 Correction is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way: and he that hateth reproof shall die.
I pray that the Lord will open your eyes to the wicked that is involved with days such as these.
Also Christmas is pagan and so is Easter.
True dressing up and receiving candy is not bad in it’s self, but when you participate in the Halloween activities, then there is something wrong with it.
Halloween has nothing to do with Christianity, Jesus or God. It has to do with the Devil. He comes as an angel of light to deceive. He will come in the form of anything that seems inviting and cute and innocent.
Christmas is the birth of Jesus. We celebrate with pretty lights and giving gifts just as God has given us The Light and the greatest Gift of all. And we don’t celebrate ‘easter’ we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. We don’t do the easter bunny and candy either. we don’t do santa claus either.
Halloween is not just commercialism. I guess that is what Satan wants you to think. He starts with your mind.
One does not have to do a satan ceremony to worship satan. Just by participating in any Halloween tradition is worshiping Satan and giving him attention and a foothold. How very sad for someone to claim they are Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ and also follow Satan. It just does not make sense. Satan is very tricky, isn’t he? watch out.
good comments Daniel.
“I’m not looking to you for answers or a Bible study by the way. I do very well on my own.”
How sad. 🙁
Yes, sad that she is not looking for answers or a Bible study. She obviously does not do very well on her own. I wonder if she even read the featured article along with the Bible verses.
Wow folks. The poster said that he/she wasn’t looking for Scripture or a Bible study from the people here. Nowhere did that poster say he/she wasn’t going to The Word for guidance.
Maybe instead of commenting on that person’s post by taking a quote and negatively commenting on it, maybe you all should post positive loving replies. “Speak the truth in love” sounds like a good idea, I wonder where that is from.
I have read many articles and Scripture on this topic and I made a prayerful decision on this topic. I find it interesting how many people would prefer to discuss my “sinful” decision to let my kids trick-or-treat instead of looking at their own life and what they can do better.
My suggestion is on things like this is to post your opinions as opinions, scripture as Gospel, and your interpretations as YOUR interpretations.
Being a good witness is not about sitting around pointing out people’s sins but rather showing the non-believer the love of Christ and the believer the Word of God (not your spin on it).
Just my opinion.
I never said trick or treating was a sin. it is something that a Christian should not even want to do for God says in His Word we are to not have any thing to do with evil. My convictions and teachings and interpretations come from The Holy Spirit.
Scripture is from The Word. It is The Word. But of course should be in context but even if out of context, should be used properly in teaching and correcting.
We are to study The Bible so we know what God wants. How can we be followers of Christ, if we don’t know what He wants us to do? I highly doubt He wants us to participate in any thing that has to do with Halloween. and that includes trick or treating.
I have been speaking the Truth in love. If it not taken that way then that person may not have love when receiving the Truth. I believe in being straight forward about the Truth.
This article is about Halloween and ‘Should Christians Celebrate it? So, that is what I am commenting about. And the answer is NO! If a Christian does not believe that, then they have not gotten a conviction from The Holy Spirit or maybe they have and they are not following or obeying. I don’t know.
When a neighbor friend asked me to watch a show about halloween on the Christian channel 17 years ago, I watched it. I was all into Halloween with my kids. But after watching that Christian show about Halloween, The Holy Spirit convicted my heart and mind and we stopped immediately. My kids were fine and are fine. They did not miss out on anything. My oldest was 9 when we stopped and it didn’t bother him one bit. He is a very strong Christian who is the editor and producer of a Christian radio show now. All my kids are fine. I have taught them the truth about Halloween and they don’t want any part of it and can not understand why their Christian friends see nothing wrong with it.
What does the word Halloween even mean? where did it come from? why does someone say ‘Happy Halloween?’ What does that mean?
What is happy about it? There is a lot of evil that goes on that night. I like to pray on that night against evil. Intercessory prayer.
The Bible is our instruction book. For instruction, correction and reproof. In the article are many wonderful scriptures that speak against Halloween. Not the word ‘halloween’ in particular, but all the back ground meanings of it and what it’s all about and the real evil things that do go on still today.
I am not pointing out anyone’s sins. Again, this article is titled. “Should Christians Celebrate Halloween?” Nothing about sin or pointing fingers.
And it’s not really an opinion when the Bible has a lot of Truth that speaks against all the origins and things about halloween.
We are to help others and warn them of Satan’s tricks. Just like how my neighbor friend helped me telling me about that show. She could have just shown me love and let me go on participating in something that was not of God or even pleasing to God but against God in all ways.
And that’s the Truth.
Well said Susan. That is the truth! 🙂
You’ve really jumped off the deep end into Legalism.
Speaking for us:
If you call walking in healthy and godly fear and trembling at the very word of God as if it is to be studied, believed, and obeyed as in (Isaiah 66:2 “For all those things hath mine hand made, and those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.”) and in (John 8:31,32 “31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”), then we’re guilty as charged.
Every Christian must choose whether they’re going to receive or reject the love of the truth. That is one of the things that in our hand to do. Otherwise they get swept off by religious wolves in sheep’s clothing and God HIMSELF will make this possible, because they receive not the love of the truth, but preferred their religion and traditions and “feelings” rather. See 2nd Thessalonians 2:10-12 (“10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.”)
Jesus said, (John 4:23,24 “23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”). God does not want us worshiping him according to lies, traditions, or “feelings”. God will not receive this. But religions teach men to be hypocrites when it comes to the truth and especially when it comes to the word of God.
James 4:4 tells us that there is no middle or neutral ground. (“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”)
2nd Corinthians 6:17,18 tell us to separate ourselves from this present evil world and the things of this present evil world including the traditions, religions, and unholy days (“17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.”).
Jesus gave all of himself for us to save us from this present evil world and from our own sins, (Galatians 1:4 “Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:”). So we owe everything to him, even ourselves and all the Lord asks is that we obey him and his word unto the end of our lives. That’s not so much to ask is it? We are told that that is reasonable (Romans 12:1 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”).
So to separate ourselves from the evils of this world is easy, because by the grace of our Lord Jesus, we can and shall do this. And this we do unto the praise of his glory. That is our minimum duty as servants of Jesus Christ. Luke 17:5-10
As for you, you speak for yourself and there appears to be nothing that we can tell you. So be it. 1st Corinthians 14:38
Very well written Tony. Thanks. you are so right. The Bible is right :o)
By just doing the so called ‘innocent’ things like allowing a 2yr. old and 4yr. old dress up in cute costumes and collect candy door to door is only opening the door to more dangerous things down the road. What does it teach children? Knocking on doors is safe? And what about when they get older? They will be used to doing something on Halloween, but then they will be older and not want to do cute dress up and trick or treat. They may explore more things that are not safe and even part of the occult and evil. Why must there be a party on that night? What exactly is the celebration? And why that night? Why can’t kids have a fun dress up, game time and special treats on another night and not call it a Halloween party? My daughters birthday is in October and one year she had a ‘dress up like your favorite animal’ birthday party. We never did that again, it was just one time. Kids are taught that they ‘must’ do something on Halloween or they are missing out. My daughter has never done anything on that night other than the usual nightly routine. If the day falled on a weekend, we went to a movie until the movie theatre was filled with costumes and people handing out and collecting candy. We also went to a fall pumpkin patch/apple orchard one year just to get away from the door bell ringing and seeing all the kids walking up and down the side walk. Now we just turn out the light and put a note on the door. We also once tried handing out bible tracts. But we feel we just do not want any part of what is going on that night.
My daughter was so surprised when she would hear her Christian friends say that they do Halloween. And some churches even allow it and encourage it. On a Wed. night, the pastor’s kids were not there cuz they were out trick or treating! We stopped going to that church. One time a church even had a Halloween dance and party. Just terrible.
Susan,
You’re putting a lot of “what-ifs” in there. I grew up going Trick-or-Treating but by age 10 I was no longer interested in anything Halloween related. It did not give me the desire to go and do “something different”. I do however enjoy the cute pictures of me dressed up as Strawberry Shortcake at age 4, etc…
I can appreciate the stand that you and so many others I have known throughout my life take on this subject. I simply don’t agree with you at all. If that works for your family that’s great. I think it is just taking something too far. If I’m wrong, I’ll hear about it after I cross Jordan.
Everyone is different. Why take a chance? Why would a Christian even want to do anything that is associated with the devil and the occult? I too participated in halloween activities as a child, and my children did for 9 years before I was given a conviction by the Holy Spirit that is was not a Christian activity and should not participate in it. I guess you just have not had the same conviction as many of us Christians who do not want to have anything to do with that ‘holiday’.
There are still many adults who dress up and have parties. Some that claim to be Christian. The World will do as the World does, but one who professes to be a follower of Jesus Christ, then they should not follow after Worldly activities, especially those that have pagan and occult ties and origins. There are real occultic things that are still done on Halloween. Some kids may get bored of the cute things and go beyond into the evil and occult things. No, not all, Thank God, but some. Why take a chance and expose your children to it? My children are very sucessful and do not party and are very wise, intelligent Christians. They did not miss out on anything. I taught them what The Word had/has to say about Halloween.
This site is called KJ Truth. King James is the version of the Bible and in the Bible is The Truth. Participating in Halloween goes against The Truth, The Bible, Christianity. Again; many professing Christians still ‘think’ it’s ok.
But as for me and my house, we shall serve the Lord.
There is nothing good about Halloween. But Fall is beautiful and pumpkins, colored leaves and apples, etc. And all the things of fall are good. For making pies, cookies. Candy corn and candy pumpkins are fine. But it’s not good to each too much candy. How do things or what we do; matters to God. Christians are to be a Witness to the World, not go along with it.
Again, I don’t believe going and getting candy while wearing a costume is in any way celebrating Satan. I don’t believe that goes against the KJV or The Truth contained therein. This theory would be like not shopping at Wal-Mart because they sell tobacco and alcohol.
That’s interesting. I’ve seen alchies and smokers use this line of reasoning to justify their willingness to continue smoking or drinking or going to bars, but never trick-or-treaters.
Again, you are taking this off the deep end. Trick-or-Treating being compared to alcoholics and smokers?! You’re simply ridiculous.
While I appreciate that many have felt the need to distance themselves from Halloween, I am more troubled by those who choose to tell others how they should “interpret” the Bible as if their interpretation was gospel truth.
Nowhere in the Bible does it say that trick-or-treating is a sin, period. All the scripture above may say it to you, but that is your interpretation and that is good for you, but please do not preach to others that your spin on things is the same as black and white Biblical truth.
Yes, my kids trick-or-treat. Yes, we have a jack-o-lantern. My church, which is a conservative Baptist church hosts a Halloween trick-or-treat option.
In the USA, Halloween is not a Pagan holiday nor the Catholic alternative. For my family it is a day where my kids get to lay dress-up outside and eat some candy.
I came here ready to listen and learn, and I am still open to hear what God wants me to learn from this discussion. I hope everyone who reads this maintains a prayerful mindset when they read this and stay away from bickering.
Finally some common sense. We grew up trick or treating and having neighborhood gatherings on the 31st of Oct. all of my 3 brothers and sister and I are all either pastors, missionaries, or theology professors all with master’s degrees in theology and most with doctorates. This is only an issue because you want it to be one. there are so few opportunities to actually see your neighbors much less hang out with their families and have some fun. Quit fear mongering and sucking the fun out of life and instead use every opportunity to share the gospel rather than running and hiding from people. You would have us abandon Easter, Christmas, birthdays, and every other celebration because thousands of years ago it meant something different. God’s people have always celebrated feasts and special events all throughout the Bible – we have so few opportunities to celebrate things as God’s people – put some joy and fellowship back in and show the world that greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world. If you use Halloween for satanic rituals – stop it. We use it to meet our neighbors and provide the community with safe fun and fellowship.
Tom,
Just because someone has a master degree in something does not mean that they receive or accept convictions from the Holy Spirit. One can fellowship with neighbors anytime of the day or night. Have a get together anytime. Why participate in Halloween when the Bible does speak against everything about it.
We are to examine everything. Everything we do should be in praise and worship to God and pleasing to Him. We can still share the Gospel even if someone rings your door bell and says “trick or treat”, you can witness to them, give them a bible tract attached to a candy bar. We did that one year.
Halloween has nothing to do with Christianity even though the RCC tried to merge with it. That is actually how it spread.
A true Spirit Filled Christian would not want to have anything to do with evil, horror, scary things, anything satanic.
My family and I have a lot of fun all the time. We do not need a secular/wordly/satanic ‘holiday’ to have fun and enjoy life and praise and worship The Lord. God does not like Halloween at all. If He did, He wouldn’t have spoken against all that Halloween stands for and represents.
I do not run and hide from people. I stay away from any form of evil because God says so. Why go around and be associated with evil on purpose? there is enough out there without having to join in on purpose.
I was at the Vet’s office today and they had a mummy hand and part of it’s arm (fake of course) half way in a bowl of candy. Well, why is that? What is the purpose and point of that? A dead arm wrapped in white gauze? How horrible! And they had a evil looking jack o lantern picture on the door. All very strange.
It is not right to teach children that it is ok to go door to door ringing door bells and asking for candy. And Halloween also teaches kids not to be affraid, it causes them to become immune to evil and danger and some may want to join in on it later in life. We have enough evil horrible people in the world without processing more through Halloween. Haunted houses, scary movies, fake murders, monsters, gory deadly things, skeletons, witches, etc…..
No one needs to abandone celebrating the birth of Jesus or His Resurrection, just stop doing the worldly commercial non Christian parts. All the things that are not of God were around long ago and do still mean the same thing. Satan does not give up. He is very tricky.
Yes, people have always celebrated feasts, but they were of God, not Satan. well, some were of Satan and still are, but Christians should not want to do them of course.
We have many opportunities to celebrate things as God’s people. Every minute and every day is a celbration and every life anad every saved person. No one is stopping you from celebrating things of God as often as you want and with whom ever you want. Make a party out of it, dress up if you want, just so long as it is a celebration of something of God or for God or to God. Worship, Praise. Put joy and fellowship in, yes I agree. I have joy and celebration and fellowship in many things in my life.
Halloween should not be used for anything. We can use that time when someone knocks on our door to witness, I mean if they do come to our house, then we can say anything to them and give them anything, right? Might as well be the best Treat of all. The Living Truth of Jesus Christ. the Gospel. not just some unhealthy candy.
I don’t need Halloween to meet my neighbors. There are many other Holy ways to provide the community with safe fun and fellowship.
Getting out a couple of times a year to talk to your neighbors is a poor excuse for loving the world and the things of the world Tom. If that was really the point, you wouldn’t wait till Oct 31 or December 25, etc. to do it. You would just do it many days a year all year long.
If it is associated with Halloween, then yes; it is bad and Halloween is associate with Satan, so yes, it is celebrating Satan. We do not even buy candy that has anything to do with Halloween on the package. Teaching your children to go begging from door to door is wrong. Dressing up in cute costumes is not wrong. but teaching them to go from house to house and ring door bells dressed in cute costumes is wrong. Who knows, ‘what if’ they decide to do that on their own one day and are greeted by evil? you never know. It’s best just not to introduce that to your kids and teach them that going to strangers house is ok and receive candy. Just nothing good about Halloween what so ever.
Yes, Halloween goes against The Word of God.
Yes unfortunately, Wal-mart does sell tobacco and alcohol, but Wal-mart is not part of the occult. And we do not buy the tobacco or alcohol there.
Christians are not of the World but in it. Just because we are in it, does not mean we are to do as the World does.
If you do not feel that Halloween is wrong, then that is your choice to choose that believe.
I choose to believe the Bible.
http://www.jesus-is-lord.com/hallowee.htm
I still disagree that Trick or Treating is “going along with the world”.
Do you send your children out of the home to be schooled instead of home-schooling. I believe that is “going along with the world.” Many call me nuts for that! But oh well. This isn’t an issue that is going to make or break my salvation or the salvation of anyone else. Why don’t we focus on being Fishers of Men instead of judging men? When we get this legalistic, we’re only law-enforcers of man-made law.
Tobacco and Alcohol are wrong. The Bible says not to even look at alcohol (Proverbs 23:31). I can’t imagine you are able to walk near the milk/dairy section of Wal-Mart (that is where the alcohol is in the local Wal-Mart) without getting a glance of these alcoholic beverages. Going to Wal-Mart and seeing alcohol must be wrong. They’re selling products we’re not even to look upon according to the KJV. Therefore shopping at Wal-Mart is wrong.
Trick-or-Treating is not teaching children to beg. That is ridiculous. I can’t even believe you want to throw that in there.
I understand you feel passionately about this Susan. That is quite clear. I wish more Christians had strong convictions.
Do you listen to the radio? Most radio stations play music more geared toward things of the Devil. I can’t believe then that you would support such a thing as Radio or buy a car that had one in it. I am of course being sarcastic. And no, I am not trying to be mean. I’m simply pointing out the extremes that can be taken in Christianity.
If you would really like to stay away from “going with the world”, you may want to resort to the Amish/Mennonite way of life. There is a group that is really staying out of the way of the world. Better safe than sorry huh?!
Tiffany, for the record, Proverbs 23:31 like all scripture must be read in its context of verses 29-35. If you read it again you should see that it is plainly an admonition to those who would “tarry long at the wine” as a condemnation against drunkenness and not looking at wine.
For clarity sake, I am including the passage:
Proverbs 23:29-35 “29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? 30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. 31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. 32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. 33 Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. 34 Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. 35 They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.”
Thank you Admin. So many Christians do take scripture out of context.
There are many bad and evil things in this world but we are to not associate with them.
And the Bible does not say to not drink alcohol, it says not to get drunk. And I do not recall it saying anything against tobacco although I do know that God wants us to keep our bodies healthy and be wise of what we eat.
i am able to walk through Wal-mart without looking at the alcohol. No, going to Wal-mart and seeing alcohol is not wrong. Shopping at Wal-mart is not wrong unless maybe you are going to buy things you don’t need while you are in debt, then it is wrong. And purchasing Halloween items, that is wrong. But shopping at the Wal-mart is not wrong in its self.
Yes, “Trick-or-Treat” is bad and is teaching your children to beg or ask or try to receive candy.
Yes, I listen to the radio and I have internet and television and cable. But I do not go to stations, sites or channels that are not pleasing to God. I don’t even want to go to any thing that is not good or watch or listen to.
I can still purchase a car and not listen to bad or secular songs just because there is a radio in it. We have a choice given to us by God. We can choose good or evil.
I actually do support Christian radio financially and prayerfully and by listening to it.
I don’t see how one can be too extreme when it comes to obeying and following God in His Holy Word and following the Holy Spirit. I do not follow the World or Satan.
No, I do not feel I need to shelter myself from the World. My family and I do very well with not being of the World while still being in it.
I love how the Duggars live (18 kids and counting show on TLC). And I do like the Amish but I don’t know much about the Mennonites.
I am a Christian doing my best to follow the Lord and do what is pleasing. And that means not doing anything that is associated with Halloween.
It is the law to have children schooled. Although I do prefer Homeschooling, my daughter is in public school. We let the decision be up to her. She is in the school, but not of the school.
There is no law that says that we are to Trick or Treat. We choose not to for it is not safe and is of Halloween and Halloween is of the Devil and the occult. Nothing good about it. But Satan is tricky and makes people ‘think’ it is ok.
Trick or Treating or public school or Home school does nothing to ones salvation. If a Christian does not have the conviction, then hopefully one day they will.
There is nothing good or safe about Trick or Treating and yes, it is of the World and being a part of the World and it’s traditions that include Satan.
I am not judging anyone. I am giving my opinion based on the Truth of the Bible. I believe and feel it is wrong go do door to door begging/asking for or expecting candy. If you do not feel it is wrong or dangerous, then that is your choice.
It’s not about legalism at all. We are under Grace.
Trick or treating is not a man-made law. It is a choice one makes to do or not to do.
We choose not to do anything that is associated with Halloween. Nothing at all.
Your arguments don’t hold water. There is no Biblical law against Trick-or Treating. If you don’t want to do that, it’s up to you.
Again… getting candy at neighboring homes is not un-Biblical. Dressing up is not un-Biblical. If you want to take something too far, that’s between you and the Lord.
And with that I’m done with this topic. It’s all opinion which only goes round and round. No one is getting anywhere.
Susan, I’m not upset or angry. I love a good healthy debate. I see we are on opposite sides of this issue, but hope to one day meet you face to face when we get to see our Saviour’s face.
Yes, you can choose to do what you want. I choose to do what God wants.
I’m glad you are not angry or upset.
It does however upset me a bit to see professing Christians participating in non biblical things, but that will always be an issue unfortunately.
I know that God is not pleases with the ‘church’ participating in Satan celebrations.
But Satan has many believers deceived in many many other ways too other than just Halloween.
I pray you come the know The Bible Truth and protect your children like how God wants us to and not give any foot hold to the Devil.
He is very tricky and I prefer to stay away from any form of evil.
but trick or treating is dangerous and assoicated with Halloween and evil. The Bible does speak against evil. No there is no specific ‘law’ against trick or treating; no. But we are not under the Law anyway. We are under Grace. We have the choice to follow God or follow Satan.
There is no law.
What does Trick or Treat really mean? What is the Trick? If a person does not give you a treat, what is the trick that you will do to them or play on them? That’s not a nice thing to teach your kids. “If someone does not give you a treat when you say Trick or Treat, then you must do a trick on them.”
True, not participating in Halloween is totally up to the person. I choose not to associate with anything that has to do with the Devil and not pleasing to God. It’s all about choice. Part of the Grace. choose or not choose.
There is no law.
No, getting candy from a neighbor is not bad if you know the neighbor and trust them. But if you have to ring their door bell and threaten them with a trick if they don’t give you a treat, then that is bad or even just teaching your kids to go door to door asking or begging for things is not nice either.
There is nothing wrong with dressing up. But it depends on what you dress up as. A Christian would not want to dress up as a witch or the devil or anything evil or scary.
I am not taking anything too far.
God gave us the Holy Spirit to guide us and it is up to us to choose if we are going to follow or not.
For those interested, I recently wrote an article about Halloween on my site. I have no intention to enter into a debate. I simply felt led to share not only my findings on the origin of Halloween, but why my family does not celebrate it and why. I just wanted to let those of you know who might be interested in reading about another Christian’s perspective on the topic. Thanks. http://www.enjoysimpleliving.com/holidays-and-celebrations.html
Very nice site and articles.
Susan,
I rejoice to see that there are other people who do not wish to partake in the worlds satanic celebrations as I am sure it is pleasing in the sight of the Lord.
It caught my attention as I was reading in the above comments that you celebrate “Christmas” and “Easter”. I was wondering if you have ever investigated the two days for yourself? If not, there is some really great information that you can find on this site in the bible studies section. The bible study is called Observing days.
It is very interesting as you begin to really dig deep into the origins of these days (Just like Halloween). I hope that it will help you to grow and strengthen your faith as you take a stand against this world. If you decide to research these days, please let me know how it goes and if I can be of any assistance.
The Lord willing we will speak soon and I pray that the Lord will lead you into ALL truth by His Holy Spirit.
Danielle, I have read many articles about the origins of Christmas and Easter. We do not celebrate them as the World does or some Christians. We do celebrate the birth of Jesus and the Resurrection of Jesus. That is all. No Santa Claus or Easter Bunny.
As a family we do get together and read the Bible scriptures about Jesus’ birth. We do give gifts to each other and take a family picture and then have a dinner. That’s it. There is nothing wrong with celebrating and rejoicing in the birth of our Lord and Saviour or His Resurrection.
With Halloween, it is totally of the devil and nothing to do with Christianity at all yet is has been tried to be Christianized first by the RCC. Roman Catholic Church. I know the history of that and the reasons, but it still does not make it right. Satan was/is behind it all.
In observance and celebration of the Resurrection of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, we again, gather as a family, read scriptures, have The Lords’ Supper and have a nice family dinner. That’s it.
No candy or eggs or bunny. I know the background of all that and Christmas.
I know the Jehovah Witnesses do not participate or celebrate any of it in anyway. We are not JW. We are Christian. There is nothing wrong in celebrating LIFE and praising God and worshiping Jesus. And that can all be done on any day or every day. Doesn’t have to be all big and fancy or cost a lot.
So, I know what you mean.
Hello Susan,
“Danielle[Daniel], I have read many articles about the origins of Christmas and Easter. We do not celebrate them as the World does or some Christians. We do celebrate the birth of Jesus and the Resurrection of Jesus. That is all. No Santa Claus or Easter Bunny.”
(I am going to point this out to you for your own sake, You said that you do not celebrate them as the World does. Susan, this sounds like the same argument that Tiffany North is using with you. The bible never instructs us to observe such days. I will show you…
I would like to state that I am not in any way associated with the Watch Tower Society. The JW’s believe that Jesus Christ is the arch angel Michael and they do not believe that He is God Almighty. I do follow the word of God and I do not follow after traditions. I am a born again Christian. I do not attend any type of denominational “church”. I do have fellowship with my brothers in the Lord in our own homes as the early church did. The reason I do not attend any so-called church is because I see all of the lies and false doctrine involved in it. If you recall, there is no place in the bible where the day of the Lord’s birth is given. We are never instructed to observe the Lord’s flesh birth as He never did either. Also if you recall, the only people who celebrated their birthday’s in the bible was Herod (Matt 14:6, Mark 6:21) and Pharaoh (Gen 40:20).
(1) [The “churches” are today observing this day (along with Satanists and greedy merchants); however it is not, and never was anything but a Satanic high day glorifying the “god of this world.”]
(2) [The wise men in Matthew 2:11 did NOT “present gifts unto each other,” as Satan always claims, “they presented unto him gifts . . .”; and this was a one-time event.]
(3) [Men presenting gifts to each other on days like these is pagan, and is a form of celebration used by servants OF THE DEVIL.]
Revelation 11:3-10 “And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another. . . .” (Merry Christmas!)
I give my children gifts, but I do not do it on Baal day.
(4) [The day of the Lord’s birth is not given in the bible.]
(5) [The season of the Lord’s birth could have been anytime except winter.]
Luke 2:1-8 “And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.”
(6) [The bible instructs that Christians should celebrate the Lord’s death, not his birth.]
1st Corinthians 11:26 “For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.”
(7) [Christmas is entirely pagan in its origins, right down to the details, and was celebrated all over the world in its many pagan forms, such as the Roman “Saturnalia,” for thousands of years before Christ; and the Lord hated it even then.]
Jeremiah 10:1-5 “For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest. . . . They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.”
(8) [December 25th is historically significant only because of its association with sun worship, which God hated. It was the main customary day of Baal worship to celebrate the apparent “rebirth” of the sun following the winter solstice.]
Ezekiel 8:16 “And he brought me into the inner court of the Lord’s house, and, behold, at the door of the temple of the Lord, between the porch and the altar, were about five and twenty men, with their backs toward the temple of the Lord, and their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun toward the east.”
(9) [The pagan festivals of “Christmas” in connection with observance of December 25th became a custom of so-called “Christianity” by the power of Catholicism and edict of the popes during the dark ages.] (See any encyclopedia.)
Everytime that you say “merry christmas” you are saying merry death of Christ.
Easter has been celebrated for thousands of years before Christ. We are never instructed to observe such a day. The bible says, 1Co 11:26 For AS OFTEN as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
This is not saying to “celebrate” the Lord’s death every third Sunday in April, Which falls on different days every year by the way, but “as often” as we would.
There are many verses forbidding us to follow after the traditions of men and observe days like these.
You have made some great points on your comments about being in the world but not of it. It is hard for me to understand how it is that you do not see that this is the same thing. I pray that the Lord will show this to you.
Mark 7:16
Daniel, sorry about that. I didn’t realize I put in an extra L.
Yes, I know what you are saying. I have read many many artilcles over the past 6 years now and honestly have not gotten a conviction yet. Maybe someday I will. I have read all the verses too. Tiffany is speaking about something about Halloween. The largest Satanic Holiday of the year for the Devil.
I am talking about being thankful and celebrating and recognizing the birth and resurrection of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Even though the Bible does not have a specific day, which actually the Resurrection does have a specific time. It is after Passover. There is no reason why we can not give Praise to God for Jesus and Worship Him any way we want, any time we want with what ever we want. God knows our hearts and why we do what we do when we do it.
You really can not compare any of that to Halloween.
I looked over your site. It is very good. I posted your video on my Facebook along with your site. that is how much I liked it.
We are not of any denomination either. We do Home Church also.
True, there is no date given of when Jesus was born. but He was born and that is reason to rejoice as the angels did. And the Shepherd came and the wise men came to see Him and Worship Him. Can we not do the same in Spirit? Nothing wrong with giving gifts to people you love either. Even though the wise men did not give gifts to each other does not mean we can not give gifts to each other showing others the love that we have from God and celebrating the Lord Jesus.
No where in the Bible does it say we can not observe or celebrate the birth of Jesus.
Isaiah 38:18
18For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth.
http://www.biblegateway.com/resources/commentaries/Matthew-Henry/Gal/Folly-Returning-Legal
(The folly of returning to legal observances for justification.
The apostle deals plainly with those who urged the law of Moses together with the gospel of Christ, and endeavoured to bring believers under its bondage. They could not fully understand the meaning of the law as given by Moses. And as that was a dispensation of darkness, so of bondage; they were tied to many burdensome rites and observances, by which they were taught and kept subject like a child under tutors and governors. We learn the happier state of Christians under the gospel dispensation. )
Yes, I know about the birthday’s of Harod and Pharoh. I see nothing wrong with celebrating the life that God has given us. There is nothing evil about it just because Harod and Phaoh were evil in what they did. God did not speak against our birth day or the day of our births and does not say we can not eat cake and sing Happy Birthday and recieve a gift and be happy and rejoice in the life that God has given us and Thank Him and Worship Him with our Life.
You may be taking scripture out of context. I have never had conviction about Birthday’s but do understand and respet those that don’t care to celeberate the life God has given them.
The World does many of the same things Christians do. They go to church, they have birthdays, they do Halloween, they play Santa Clause and Easter Bunny. But True Christians are set apart from the World. We are in it but not of it. God knows His Sheep and He will seperate the Sheep from the Goats.
So, then no one should ever buy anything or make anything for anyone and call it a gift and give it to them? We have the Gift of Life every day from God. We give and recieve the Gift of Love everyday and Grace.
You have a lot of scripture out of context. We can plug them into anywhere to use as we want to. That is another reason why we no longer go to ‘church’. That is how false doctrine is spread. By pluggint in certain verses where they don’t belong and add them to sermons where they don’t belong and vise versa.
If you do not observe ‘day’s then why not give your children gifts on Baal day? It would not matter. Just like it would not matter if I ate candy or dressed up like a Bunny on Oct. 31st. I would not go door to door looking like that, but I could have a dress up party on that day for my kids, with candy, but certainly not call it Halloween. It could be a birthday party or a celebration to the Lord for His gifts to us. I don’t give recognition to the Devil and I won’t celebrate his day.
So, Christains can celebrate and rejoice in The Lord Our Saviour any day, not just Dec. 25th. Maybe even July 4th if we want. Any day is fine to give Thanks and Praise unto the Lord.
A lot of your verses you use are from the Old Testament. We are to learn from the Old but live by the New. Do you still observe the Sabboth? OT says you are to.
If you type in observe in the word serach KJV on Bible Gateway, you will see many verses with the word observe.
We do celebrate the death of Jesus as with the Resurrection and also His Birth. With no birth, there is no death and with no death, there is not Resurrection with no Resurrection, there is no Salvation, with no Salvation there is no Hope. I celebrate and rejoice in My Saviour Jesus Christ.
Yes, some people do things in vain. God knows our hearts. I have read all those verses before, many times. If you read them in context and in there entirety, it does not match what one does to celebrate the Birth of Jesus Christ. Those verses are not about celebrating Jesus birth at all or any birth for that matter.
Every day belongs to the Lord. God made all the days and we are to rejoice and be glad. None of them are bad but people can do bad things on them. Like Oct. 31, there is Halloween. Halloween is bad, but Oct. 31 is not. That is actually Reformation Day too.
You can not compare Jesus to the sun god. Jesus was not reborn He was Resurrected. we are reborn as Christians. Christians do not worship the sun. we Worship The Son.
You can not compare Halloween with the Resurrection of Jesus either. Yes, Easter was a real pagan holiday and still have all the paganism of it.
I celebrate the death and Resurrection of Jesus every day and once a year as a family, we give special Thanks and Praises unto God our Father for the Death Resurrection of Jesus Christ. There is nothing wrong with that. No where in the bible does it say we can not do that.
Observing, celebrating, rejoicing, praising and worshiping God and Jesus for His Life, Death and Resurrection is not a tradition of man.
The RCC did start many traditions and customs to try to convert pagans. I am former RC. We do not do any traditions or customs of men or the RCC anymore. We follow the Bible and Praise and Worship and Celebrate and Rejoice and Thank, etc. It does not matter what day or time or how; as long as it is not evil of course or of demonic decent or of pagan gods.
The Lord has shown me. No it is not the same thing.
You can not compare Halloween to ‘Christmas’ or ‘Easter’
In ‘Christmas’ I mean; the Birth of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. And in ‘Easter’ which I mean; Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
What does Satan’s Holiday’s have to do with Jesus’s Birth, Death and Resurrection? Nothing.
It should not have even been brought up on this article comment site. The question of the article is: Should Christians Celebrate Halloween? The answer is: NO!
I am in the World but not of it. Great is He that is in me, then he that is in the World.
I do not follow after mans customs or tradtions that go against God or Jesus in anyway.
I observe all days as gifts from God. I celebrate each day and Worship God each day and Praise Him and Glorify Him each and every day. I may sing or dance or smile or give a gift or take a walk or bake a cake. How ever I choose to do it, is ok with God if it is for Him and to Him and not in vain.
I understand what you mean and where you are coming from. You do not have to observe Jesus Birth, Death and Resurrecton on a certains specific day if you don’t want to.
We choose to go along with those days cuz there is nothing wrong with those days and my husband gets off work, my kids get off school and work and stores are closed and it’s a great day to celebrate the Birth or Jesus Christ. Any day is. Actually we do our celebrating on Dec. 24th. if that matters.
And we actually do not celebrate and Thank God for the Death and Resurrection of Jesus on what ever day ‘Easter’ is. We celebrate and observe it after Passover.
I pray you can rejoice and worship and celebrate the Birth, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ too with joyfulness and Thanksgiving in your heart and give gifts on any day you want even if it is Dec. 25th. Nothing wrong with that. It is the Day The Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!
The Lord was not an infant in swaddling in a manger as the myth of X-Mas falsely purports!
He was a young child probably closer to two years old in Matthew 2:16. “16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.”
Christmas means the “Mass of Christ” as in Roman Catholic mass as in the blasphemy of claiming to transform the biscuit into the body, blood, bones, and divinity of Jesus during the Mass in a process she calls “transubstantiation.” It is short for “Christ’s Mass!”
Tom,
Luke 2: 7And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
True, Jesus was around 2 when the wise men reached him.
Luke 2: 13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
15And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
16And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
17And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
I would call that celebrating and observing. Even though it was only one time that the angels and shepherd did that does not mean we can not. that would be like the Bible saying: “Do not observe and celebrate that Jesus was born and is your Saviour.” Why would God tell us not to? He didn’t!
But He does say to stay away from evil and all form of it like Halloween.
The ‘Host’ is called a wafer and Transubstantiation is: (means that the bread and wine actually become the body and blood of Christ. They look and taste like bread and wine but have been supernaturally changed into the physical and spiritual essence of Jesus. This is more than just the body and blood, it is the soul and divinity of Christ present in the “host” (the wafer).
This is a key distinctive of Catholic doctrine. The sacrifice of Calvary is renewed every day in the mass by the transubstantiation of bread and wine into Christ’s body and blood. The Protestant Church sees the work of the Cross as a finished work, done “once for all”. Catholics see the crucifixion as something to be renewed daily and therefore repeat Christ’s death once a day. All Priests are required to celebrate mass every day as part of their vows. )
The RCC has a lot of things twisted. They are the ones that adopted and mingled all the paganism with the Bible.
We all know the word Chritsmas to mean The time when we recognize and celebrate that Jesus Christ was born unto us. Not necessarily when, but that He was. There is nothing wrong with that. There are many different answers out there as to where the word Christmas came from and what it means. Christ Mass. Mass can mean a mass of people, the RC assembly Mass. Mass meant the ‘end’ cuz people would want to leave before the Eucharist (wafer), so they moved it to the middle. So, there are many different meanings and such about the word. And most Christians have not heard of the word transubstantiation, that is a RC word and custom, so they are not even thinking of that as being associated with the word Mass.
It doesn’t bother me to say Merry Christmas. It’s like saying, Praise God for sending Jesus! Let’s celebrate!
Luke 2: 10And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
Celebrate: proclaim; to praise widely or to present to widespread and favorable public notice, as through newspapers or novels.
The angles celebrated.
But I will not celebrate Halloween and I’m sure the angels won’t either. Just the fallen ones of course along with Satan.
As we speak truth in love, I believe there is one thing missing. Conviction. Without conviction from the Holy Spirit, scales are still on eyes. I know this because I’ve lived it. I got saved in my late 20’s and had loved all things wordly. I loved secular music, movies, soap operas, smoking, drinking…and halloween. The day I got saved didn’t instantly take all of those desires from me. As I studied His Word, and asked Him to search my heart, He started convicting me of things that did not glorify Him. I got pregnant and quit smoking. I began listening to Christian music (and actually liked it more!). But each step was a process–it’s “Sanctification.” I remember years ago watching soap operas because I was (still am) a stay at home mom and was bored when my kids napped. I kept telling myself, “it’s okay, it’s just a show, it’s not real.” It wasn’t until I asked God-“Lord, I really want to watch this stuff but I feel you pressing it out of me–please take away the desire.” And He did. I am still growing in the Lord, sanctification is an ongoing process. We’re all “works in progress” who desperately need a Savior. So without conviction, people who celebrate halloween and santa will continue to do so. I don’t typically debate this stuff because I know this is a “hot topic” among Christians so I try to do what the Lord has called my family to do, and let others do what they will. Because bickering or debating without conviction won’t change hearts. Only the Lord can do that! And He will when we’re ready! AMEN!!!
Very well put Lisa. That is how it was for me too. Little by little. My very first conviction was Halloween and I was so grateful to my neighbor friend who shared the truth with me and her conviction of why they no longer did Halloween. She could have just ignored what I was doing and shown love, but she didn’t. She did show me in love, the Truth.
Yes, it may take more time for some. I actually had forgotten that, so thanks for the reminder.

As we speak truth in love, I believe there is one thing missing. Conviction.
This comment makes no sense to me. Speaking the truth only comes from conviction from the Holy Spirit. Otherwise, how can you speak the truth??
Speaking it in love is not up for debate. It is what God commands us to do. There is nothing missing when you do so. If you speak the truth without love, you might as well speak with a forked tongue.
This is my whole point. When people post here looking down at others for their viewpoint it is not being done in a loving manner.
No, some people can still speak the truth about anything without conviction or from the Holy Spirit. I don’t get what you mean. The Bible is Truth and one can read it and preach it even if they don’t have love, or conviction or the Holy Spirit.
I am not looking down on anyone. I am giving my belief statements on why I believe Christians Should Not Celebrate Halloween. That is the title of the article. So, I am giving my reasons why I believe the answer is NO.
And I don’t see it as a view point. Truth is Truth. The Bible is very clear about evil and Satan, and demonic things and horror and fear, etc….. the Bible is not a Viewpoint or opinion or a debate. It is the Holy Living Word of God.
I truly hope Christians will pray and ask God to teach them and convict them through the Holy Spirit about Halloween.
I was speaking of conviction in the listener’s heart, not the speaker. My friend told me years ago that halloween was evil, and said all the reasons listed in the post. I thought she was crazy, legalistic and judgemental. We were both Christians, so why were our views so different? My heart back then was not ready to receive the Truth. I pushed it away and justified because I thought halloween was fun and innocent. After sincerely praying about it with my husband and asking God to show me if it was wrong, and to take away the desire to partake—He did. So what I’m saying to everyone here is, there’s no point in debating to the point where people are getting offended. It’s not a salvation issue, but I sincerely believe that when you seek His Holy Word and listen to His still voice, you will hear the Truth.
I agree Lisa. Your points have been well taken. This article was posted, because of this time of year. As a young Christian, it was around this time of year that I was first confronted with the facts about the origins and the contradiction between real Christianity and “Halloween.” I am not talking about Catholicism. That is not Christianity. It was then that I was compelled to choose. I am glad that nobody let me slide, because my flesh wanted the things of the world, but having received the love of the truth, it was the truth in the word of the Lord that opened my eyes and heart to the importance of obeying the truth. By the grace of God it became obvious to me as a baby Christian, that if I could not be faithful in this little thing, that there was no way that I would ever be able to be faithful in much.
Lisa,
Thanks for clearing that up. Your right. It’s amazing how one never thinks about how bad it is until the Holy Spirit shows us. But, yes, you must be open to the truth and then receive it. Very true.
True, it is not a salvation issue or a doctrine issue either, but it is a witness issue and obedience issue. Know what I mean?
My daughter is in a Theater group at school where the group is doing a Trunk or Treat at their school. Well, my daughter is one of the two people in charge of publicizing for this group. She told the head person that she could not hang the flyers or publicize it because it was against her Christian beliefs. well, many other kids in the group are Christian too and they didn’t understand what she was talking about. They said, “It’s ok to do Halloween, we do it, there is nothing wrong with it.” She tried to tell them, but they would not listen. She will not be a the Trunk or Treat handing out candy either. And they are mad at her for not ‘doing her job’. but she’d rather have them be mad at her than God be sad about her doing it or hanging the flyers. She just can not go against her conviction either. She has never done Halloween and does not understand why people want to.
I asked the boy today who was wearing the costume, what it was. I forgot the name of it but it was a murderer on one of those chain saw movies. This boy is in the group with my daughter too. My daughter said the boy wore it all day again too to publicize the Trunk or Treat and an another event tomorrow night where kids dress up a mummies and monsters or anything scary. And it isn’t even Halloween yet. It seems that it lasts all the month of October.
Why do people hang fake ghosts from their trees and have fake witches plastered against their windows? I don’t get it either. What a waste of time and money.
Very good comments Lisa and Admin.
You can’t trash Halloween simply because you don’t want to look like the world or participate in the world’s activities unless you also stop wearing the worlds clothes, driving the world’s cars, listening to the world’s music, playing the world’s games (football, basketball, soccer, etc)having the world’s superbowl parties, watching the world’s movies and eating the world’s food. You can’t be salt and light and agents of change when you shake your judgemental finger at the world and turn your back on them and walk away.
Tom,
That hardly makes any sense at all. Some things are of God and some are not. Halloween is in no way of God, so why would a Christian want to participate in it? It is evil and of evil origin. Why encourage it?
You can not compare Halloween to clothing and cars and sports activities.
Christians are in the World, not of it. I wear modest clothing, drive sensible vehicles, I do not listen to secular music. there is nothing evil about sports unless you are cheating and gambling with them. Then that is bad. We are to have fun and get exercise and fresh air. Nothing bad about sports at all. Nothing wrong with Super Bowl parties, although we are not football fans so we don’t go to them or have them. As long as no one gets drunk or does anything evil or sinful at the parties, then they are ok. A great way to meet neighbors and fellowship and share the Gospel.
I do not watch bad movies. Nothing over G. And mostly Christian of course. God gave us creativity to use and have fun and laugh. the World’s food? God made the food. I do not eat much processed food if that is what you mean.
I am not judging anyone. I am stating my biblical beliefs about Halloween. Call it opinion if you want I suppose. But to me it’s the True facts. Nothing good about it. It’s a Trick alright. Satan’s trick.
I do not judge the World either. That is up to God.
I am not turning my back on anyone or walking away. Just because I choose to not participate in Halloween? I will never participate in any such Satanic Holiday.
You can if you want. It is a free country and we are under Grace. You can do what you want. It’s none of my business.
I am not judging you if you do it. If it doesn’t bother you, then it doesn’t.
Tom, it sounds like you’re justifying the world;
if Christians cannot make manifest(Ephesians 5:13) the out right wickedness of satanism being glamourized with “candy and fun”,then who would? These are young children being introduce to something evil and the father of it is Satan;and parents and guys like you are helping!
Speaking of a “judgmental finger”, your supposed to judge righteous judgment, but instead you unrighteously condemn someone that has done a righteous work. Who’s judging????
When you said “…you shake your judgmental finger at the world and turn your back on them and walk away.” The way you said that is really messed-up. I think it’s the other way around. I also think you need to come out the world and serve The Lord Jesus Christ with all you heart, and quit trying to justify evil especially “Halloween”.
Isaiah 5:20 “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil: that put darkness for light, and light for darkness: that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”
Today after school outside my daughter’s high school was a teen boy dressed up in a scary white mask with crazy hair and had on a black outfit. It was very creepy. Not sure what it was but he also had a fake long knife with fake blood on the handle. It is not even the Halloween day/night and already someone one was dressed up in a scary evil costume. My daughter said the boy wore it all day long. I will be calling the school tomorrow and complain because that should not be allowed. They are not even allowed to wear hats in her school.
Many evil people will wear masks and disguises on Halloween to do real evil horrific acts like murder and rape and kidnapping, etc. It gives them the perfect opportunity. How sad that some Christians feel Halloween is ok.
Christmas and Easter have been defiled by pagan traditions down though the years, too, but the true Christian can still worship God with a pure spirit on these occasions. Halloween, however, is without any redeeming quality at all. It is, and always has been, a day associated with dark superstitions and all that is evil and ungodly. I think Paul’s instruction to the Thessalonians is an appropriate way to conclude the matter…
Prove all things: hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil.
I Thessalonians 5:21,22
Susan,X-Mas and Easter was defiled long before God (Jesus)was made flesh.Call these days Christian if you want, but the Lord has not forgot how these celebrations started. The Lord commanded that we not worship Him the way that others worship their gods.Dt.30-32 …inguire not after their gods, saying, how did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.Thou shalt not do so unto the Lord thy God:…
Susan, you can’t take dirt and put fudge, whipped topping, and a cherry over it and call it a hot fudge cake ! It is still dirt.
X-mas and Easter were celebrated long before the Lord was flesh.
Calling these satanic days Christian don’t make them Christian any more than Halloween.
Their still satanic and the Lord hates them.
why are you are telling us we can’t celibrate Halloween you people make me laugh no disrespect but Halloween is fun for me now your calling us bad i thinck you people need help
halloween is great I might have learing dissibilety’s but I can talk sence than you people on the video
people like you make me angry I love Halloween
my nieces loves Halloween and your just going to take it away from them it’s not us thats evil it’s YOU!
Why? Please read the post to learn why.
Romans 14:20 Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a man to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble.
Paul said this because there were some that would buy meat from the market that was sacrificed to Ideals, but others thought that this was a sin because it was unclean meat. some others said that in eating this meat you partake in the worship of the ideals because their believe was that after the sacrifice you eat the meat and gain its power, but others say that since our God is the one true God then this meat and the pretences that are given to it has no meaning. Therefore, there was a division in the early church because of this very topic.
1 Corinthians 8:12 When you sin against your brothers in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.
The point I am trying to get at. Yes, Christmas and Easter started as a pigeon Holliday and we all know Halloween is one also.
However, I beseech you pray earnestly about your decision and not to sin against your conscience. Because you will stand before your Lord and give testimony about your choices, you made in your life and the life of your family. But first You need to make sure your walk with the Lord is close and you’ve been in the scripture so that you may not be lead astray by a voice that you might think is the Holly Spirit.
So to say, that this holiday is wrong or God hates it well….HE HATES ALL SIN. There is not one sine that is worse then the other.
Ephesians 6:12 For we[a] are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
Oops I meant pagan not pigeon lol…. But let me say one more thing that the Holly spirit has laid on my heart. How many Christians do you know that were saved on Halloween Vrs. Christmas or Easter, or even Valentines day? I don`t know of any. Yes these were pagan holidays back in the day and now the world has made it one big sells pitch. But if the meaning be hide each Holladay is Holly and edifying then that is what we should dwell on, and not from where it came from.
God looks forward not back word. How many times did God called Abraham the man that I love even though he messed up a whole lot of times. No Abraham was named the father of our faith because God say Abraham for who he was and who he was going to be after He was done with Abraham. So in say this how would God see you when you celebrate Christmas, Easter, valentines and even Halloween?
If you accept that these days are pagan and evil why celebrate them at all? After I learned the truth about them I stopped keeping these days. The article and the video on Halloween pose the question “Should Christians celebrate Halloween”? This is up to the reader, all I am doing is trying to make you think. Thanks for the comment and may the Lord lead you into all truth. Also please look into this article regarding the Bible versions. http://kjtruth.com/2010/07/where-does-your-bible-come-from/ There are some videos on the corrupt Bible versions on our you tube page as well http://www.youtube.com/kjthetruth
Don’t celebrate on Halloween. Pray and shine as bright as you can in the midst of the darkness of this pagan holiday. please, people need light to see the truth or else darkness will continue to take root making its way into the heart and mind of Gods creation 🙁
This topic is very debatable. However, I do not like that you are condemning the people who try to argue this. There is a fine line between spreading God’s word and forcing people to convert, or switch over to it.
Aimee, no where in the article do I condemn ANYBODY for celebrating this secular holiday. In the last day Jesus will judge you for what you have done, I just posed the question “Should we as Christians Celebrate Halloween”. My thoughts are NO we should not and I have supported my argument with scripture. It is up to you to accept it or not.
Alright, I see that. I’m just saying that I don’t like seeing other religions or practices being put down; yes, it is all in the name of God! I totally agree with that part. But we as Christians should be more accepting of others. You may consider yourself accepting, but in a non-Christian’s perspective, this article is telling them that they are wrong– a lot. People like to think that they are right. It’s only natural. So let’s say that you were going to help an atheistic friend (or acquaintance, if you choose to not be friends with people like that) learn about God and Christianity and morality. By not being tolerant of their questions and understanding, you may send the wrong message to them about what being a Christian truly is. This article is very thorough, and supports your opinion very well– I commend you on behalf of that. Maybe this website is more for posting deep thoughts and debate; no one can really agree.
Thank you for understanding my thoughts, and may God bless you. I will ponder this; in the meantime, I think I’ll not say anything more.
