Authority In The Church

Hebrews 13:17 “Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.”

1st Timothy 5:1 “Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren. . . .”

1st Corinthians 5:6 “Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?”

1st Timothy 5:17 “Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.”

2nd Timothy 2:20-21 “But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.”

1st Peter 5:5 “Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.”

[The first sentence is written for the younger: the second is to the elder.]

1st Corinthians 1:26-29 “For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: but God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; and base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence.”

Λ (If you are chosen of God then you are: “foolish”, “weak”, “base”, “despised” and that “which [is] not”.)

Numbers 12:3 “(Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)”

(So, slamming things around (as when he broke the tablets) was not his normal routine!)

Hebrews 11:25 “By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. . . .”

Acts 7:22-27 “But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust [Moses] away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?” (Moses was a faithful ruler and judge, and was treated like dirt, just like the Lord. Be expecting this.)

2nd Timothy 2:24-26 “And the servant of the Lord must . . . be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient . . . that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.”

2nd Peter 2:10 “But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.”

Λ [Ignorant men read “government” here as if it read, “the government,” thinking, “You should respect the federal government.” The word, “government,” here, is generically used as meaning the act of governing or “controlling” something. (To “govern” an engine is to “control” it: i.e., a “governor.”]

Galatians 4:1-2 “Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; but is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.”

[This has nothing to do with “the government.”]

James 3:4 “Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.”

Λ [The “governor” (or helmsman) “controls” the ship’s direction with the “helm”. (This is not politics.)]

Romans 13:1-4 “For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.”

1st Corinthians 12:28 “And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.”

[The “governments” referred to here are “in the church” (not outside of it, and not separate from it).]
